Joe Paterno was an American college football coach who served as the head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions from 1966 to 2011. He was the winningest coach in NCAA Division I FBS history with 409 victories. He was also the first coach to reach 400 wins. Paterno was born in Brooklyn, New York, and attended Brown University, where he played football and graduated with a degree in English. He began his coaching career at Penn State in 1950 as an assistant coach and was promoted to head coach in 1966. During his tenure at Penn State, Paterno led the Nittany Lions to two national championships, five undefeated seasons, and 24 bowl game appearances. He was named the National Coach of the Year in 1986 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006. Paterno was also known for his philanthropic work, donating millions of dollars to various charities and causes. He was also a vocal advocate for college athletes, pushing for better academic standards and improved benefits for student-athletes. Paterno died in January 2012 at the age of 85. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.
